1. Fredericton band, Andy Brown, finalist in North American-wide music competition. Vote today!

Local indie folk band, Andy Brown, has landed a top 5 spot in the coveted North American-wide Test Drive 2010 music competition, sponsored by industry leaders Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings. While the band has already won a pair of Taylor guitars and a supply of Elixir strings and cables, the competition is far from over and Andy Brown needs his fans’ support to take home the top prize, two days of recording time in New York City’s Tainted Blue studio and a formal artist relationship with Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings.

In April of 2010, local musician, Andy Brown, applied for a music competition through SonicBids with hopes of gaining North American-wide exposure. A couple of months later Brown learned that his band was in the running, amongst almost 1,000 other musicians, for the top prize.

With the help of a solid fan base voting for the Fredericton-based band, Andy Brown landed a spot among the top 50 North American artists vying for a chance to move on to round two of the Test Drive 2010 music competition. After the Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings representatives deliberated on originality, professionalism of recordings, marketability and an essay, Brown became one of five finalists to move on to round two of the competition. “To make it this far is a huge accomplishment,” says Brown. “To think that enough fans voted for us every day to help us make it into the round two of the competition, well, it speaks volumes about the people who love our music. And the voting process was lengthy too. Their continuous support is why we made it this far. Hopefully our fans have lots of voting power left in them for round two.” As a prize for making it to round two, the final phase of the competition, two Taylor Guitars and a supply of Elixir strings and cables were shipped to Brown. Round two of the competition required Brown to showcase the prizes in a unique video, again, to be voted on by fans. Paul McAllister, co-founder of Feelsgood.ca and Folly Fest, was on-board to film the video and producer of Brown’s latest album, Brad Perry, brought the band into the studio to record a new song, specifically for the competition. “The song, Happiness, is about love,” explains Brown. “It’s about knowing who you want to be with and the simple things about love. The video definitely plays on this concept, but in a cheeky, memorable way. It’s funny but you’ll find that it’s very sincere.” Only one of two of Canadian musicians in the top five, Brown is confident that his video’s unique concept and new song, now a fan favourite at live shows, will draw in the votes needed to take home the top prize. “Winning this would change our lives,” says Brown. “We’re ready for this. Although our second album, False Alarm, was released a year ago, we’re working on the songs for our next album. And yes, Happiness will make it onto that one. To think that we could end up with a formal artist relationship with Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings and record at Tainted Blue would truly be a dream come true.” Voting for Brown started Monday, August 16 and runs until September 15, 2010. Last winter the CBC taped a concert by The Olympic Symphonium at the beautiful Rebecca Cohn theatre in Halifax, NS for their Concerts on Demand series at Radio2. It is now available for streaming here. Big thanks to Glenn Meisner, Karl Falkenham and Rod Sneddon for putting this together. The band would also like to extend an apology to those who waited three days in a row for three rained-out shows in Fredericton, NB earlier this month. Forecasting is out of our control but we're working on developing our own meteorological system for future situations like this. In the meantime, you can catch the Olympic Symphonium with Rose Cousins at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton, NB on September 18th. We first met the lovely Gianna Lauren while playing Ottawa back in 2008 when she offered up her floor/couch for accomodations and then us yummy breakfast. It was a friendship forged in a sweaty bar and bonded together with coffee laughter. Since that night, Gianna has been steadily charming audiences across Canada with her debut album, Fist In Heart, and refining her vegan baking and working on a radio documentary about midwifery. Ceux-ci seront donc liés à votre fiche. Si vous êtes un artiste, vous devez créer votre profil personnalisé. Vous serez contacté par courriel au début du mois d’août afin de vous inviter à déposer votre candidature pour les Vitrines de Contact ontarois 2011. CULTURE DAYS IN NEW BRUNSWICK September 20th -26th Culture Days is a volunteer movement and annual event open to all communities and individuals who believe in the importance of arts and culture in Canadian life. Call for Activity Organizers Individual artists, diverse cultural groups, organizations, municipalities, and festivals old and new, small and large are coming together in the pan-Canadian volunteer movement known as Culture Days to catalyze and inspire greater public participation in arts and culture. Culture Days is open to all communities and individuals who believe in the importance of arts and culture in Canadian life. How the movement works: Provinces and territories across Canada are each designating a weekend in September as Culture Days in their region. Volunteer committees are working at the provincial and national levels to secure media partners and corporate champions who will help get the word out to the Canadian public. During Culture Days, thousands of activity organizers across Canada will invite the public to experience and co-create arts and culture in the very communities where they live. Will you be one of them? This is an open call for all individuals, groups and municipalities to join the movement and offer a free interactive arts or cultural activity during Culture Days in your region. Everyone is encouraged to get involved – whether you are a professional or amateur cultural creator (i.e. artist, artisan, educator, animateur, historian, curator, architect, designer, etc), group or organization, including culturally diverse, Aboriginal, urban and rural communities. Music New Brunswick is proud to announce the return of Semaine MNB Week, a three day musical event that will take place in Moncton on October 7th, 8th and 9th.

Professional development, showcasing and networking opportunities will be at the forefront of Semaine MNB Week 2010. The event will feature performances by a variety of emerging and established New Brunswick artists who will have the opportunity to demonstrate their talent in front of the public audience and invited delegates.

The event will be highlighted by the addition of the first annual Prix MNB awards, which will recognize the efforts and successes of all those participating in the creation of music within the province of New Brunswick.

Showcase Eligibility

• All applicants must be MNB members.

• All applicants must be available on the evenings of October 7th, 8th and 9th 2010

Grammy Nominees to Play House Concert - Upper Coverdale, NB Bluegrass Grammy Award Nominees Raymond McLain and Mike Stevens will be in Upper Coverdale, NB on Tuesday August the 10th performing a House Concert at the home of Ivan and Vivian Hicks. The show will begin at 7:30 pm. Space is limited so reservations are required. Tickets for the Hicks' House Concert are $15 and can be obtained by calling Ivan and Vivian at 506 386-2996, 506 386-5812 or email ivan@ivanhicks.com Mike Stevens and Raymond McLain are a dynamic Bluegrass and Old Tyme duo. Among the many accolades they have received is a Grammy Nomination in the late 1980’s when playing with Jim and Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys. Mike is acknowledged as one of the best Harmonica Players on the PLANET! He goes where no other player goes with this unconventional bluegrass instrument. He has been labeled a true innovator in his genre. In fact his techniques are studied around the world and documented in the Smithsonian Institution. He tours internationally including recent forays to Taiwan and Japan. In addition he has performed more than 300 times on the Grand Ole Opry Stage. Mike is also renowned for his work with ArtsCan Circle a charity he founded to help at risk youth in the north. Through ArtsCan Mike collects instruments to be taken north and encourages kids there to learn music and express themselves. Raymond McLain is a truly amazing musician. He is featured in “Masters of the Five String Banjo” and has influenced many including the playing style of Bela Fleck. He has toured in more than 60 countries, performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Centre and The Kennedy Centre with the McLain Family Band as well as countless times on the ‘Opry Stage with Jim and Jesse McReynolds. He has also performed with the likes of Doc Watson, John Hartford and Alison Krauss. Collectively Mike and Raymond have released more than 10 albums and they perform regularly at Carter and Lewis Family events in the US and at Bluegrass and Folk Festivals far and wide. 1. Invitation - Oiseaux de nuit, volet de la FrancoFête en Acadie

Les artistes sont invités à s’inscrire au volet « Oiseaux de nuit » de la FrancoFête en Acadie 2010

Une série de spectacles nocturnes se dérouleront dans la ville de Moncton à partir de 23 h après les vitrines officielles.

La date limite pour recevoir les propositions est le vendredi 13 août. La 14e édition de la FrancoFête en Acadie aura lieu à Moncton, au Nouveau- Brunswick, du 3 au 7 novembre 2010.

La sélection des artistes pour les Oiseaux de nuit 2010 se fera par un processus de jury. Toutefois, la priorité sera accordée aux artistes émergeants des provinces atlantiques. Il s’agit de l’occasion par excellence de se faire voir et entendre par les divers délégués de l’Atlantique, du Canada et de l’Europe qui participent à l’événement annuel des arts de la scène en Acadie.

Quelques tables du Salon Contact seront disponibles à un prix réduit pour les artistes qui participeront aux Oiseaux de nuit, selon un principe du premier arrivé, premier servi. Veuillez en aviser la coordonnatrice, Véronique Godin info@francofete.org. Il est à noter que cette année les artistes participant aux Oiseaux de nuit recevront une passe FrancoFête donnant accès à la majorité des activités de l’évènement.

East Coast Style' Promotional Compilation CDs: Volume 3 Deadline to submit: July 30, 2010 The East Coast Music Association is excited to announce a call for submissions for its 3rd edition of the ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style'; compilation CDs. Distributed to 2000 International and Canadian delegates, as well as sold exclusively at ECMA events and on line store, these two promotional CDs will be used to market and promote Atlantic Canadian artists at upcoming Canadian and International music industry conferences (ECMA 2011, Canadian Music Week, International Folk Alliance Conference, Atlantic Film Festival, NXNE, Australia Song Summit). ECMA will be producing two-genre themed promotional compilation CDs: ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style Roots'; and ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style Rocks';. Appel Appel D'offres Formateurs Ateliers en technique de scène destinés aux élèves des écoles secondaires francophones du N.-B.

Accros de la chanson est un projet musical s’adressant aux jeunes des écoles secondaires francophones du Nouveau-Brunswick. Il vise non seulement à encourager les jeunes francophones à développer leur identité culturelle et à s’épanouir musicalement en français, mais il permet aussi à notre communauté francophone du Nouveau-Brunswick de découvrir différents styles musicaux et d’encourager la relève artistique musicale d’ici.

Durant la 7^e édition du projet (2010-2011), la FJFNB offrira une formation approfondie aux comités techniques des 22 écoles secondaires francophones de la province afin de leur transmettre les connaissances nécessaires pour le bon fonctionnement de leurs tâches au sein de leur école et afin d’assurer un impact positif à long terme pour l’école. Ce projet s’intéresse à la technique de scène comme moyen d’appui aux arts dans les écoles et comme composante de la construction identitaire auprès de la jeunesse francophone et acadienne de la province. L’idée d’ajouter un volet technique à Accros de la chanson surgit naturellement puisqu’il permet surtout le développement des jeunes qui s’intéressent l’industrie de la scène francophone d’ici.

Description : La Fédération des jeunes francophones du Nouveau-Brunswick (FJFNB) est à la recherche de techniciens professionnels œuvrant dans l’industrie du spectacle afin d’offrir des ateliers de formation à des jeunes des écoles secondaires francophones dans le cadre du projet Accros de la chanson. Les ateliers de formation seront présentés dans les écoles entre les mois d’octobre 2010 et février 2011 inclusivement.

Nous recherchons des techniciens passionnés et qui désirent travailler avec des jeunes afin de partager, d’un point de vue théorique et pratique, leurs connaissances en sonorisation, éclairage et régie de plateau. En initiant les jeunes aux techniques de base, les techniciens devront encadrer les participants pour que ceux-ci en ressortent avec les connaissances requises pour le bon déroulement technique d’un spectacle.

Note : Les techniciens intéressés à offrir un atelier portant sur un ou plusieurs aspects techniques peuvent indiquer leurs préférences dans une lettre accompagnant leur C.V.

Responsabilités :

Préparer des ateliers destinés aux jeunes des écoles secondaires (environ 14 à 18 ans) en ayant comme outil le guide de formation disponible en septembre 2010 ;

Se déplacer et animer les ateliers dans les écoles assignées ;

Compiler, dans un court rapport, les équipements techniques disponibles dans les écoles assignées avec l’aide de la FJFNB.

Exigences : Les candidats intéressés à agir à titre de formateur doivent être reconnus comme techniciens professionnels. Les personnes retenues posséderont idéalement de l’expérience de travail auprès des jeunes.

Disponibilités : Les candidats doivent être disponibles à travailler selon l’horaire des écoles participantes.

Date limite : Le jeudi 29 juillet à 16 h 30.

8. Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival Open for Submissions

Calling all new bands and artists! With the help of their long time partner Galaxie, The Harvest Jazz Blues Festival is offering new and upcoming New Brunswick artists a chance for exposure at a local, provincial and national level. The festival encourages all interested and eligible artists to apply. Applications will be adjudicated by a festival-appointed jury and the final contestants notified by August 20, 2010. ';The Galaxie Rising Star Program helps in the promotion and discovery of emerging Canadian talent and allows for fantastic showcase opportunities';, says Louis Bellavance, Director of the Galaxie Rising Stars Program. ';The valuable partnerships between the Galaxie Rising Stars Program and The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival has allowed us to highlight and reward the talents of gifted artists year after year';, he adds. 12. David Suzuki set to rock Playlist for the Planet

VANCOUVER – Canada’s best musicians are getting ready to rock the planet, and they want this country’s unsung talents to join them. Broken Social Scene, Rush, Bruce Cockburn, Joel Plaskett and Randy Bachman are just some of the stellar songwriters who have agreed to create tunes about the environment for an album called Playlist for the Planet.

The project kicks off June 17 with a contest and website cosponsored by the David Suzuki Foundation and CBC Radio 3. It also jump-starts the Foundation’s 20^th anniversary celebrations happening this fall.

From heavy metal and hip-hop to classical and jazz, independent Canadian songwriters are invited to contribute their own environmentally themed songs over the summer. Musicians can register and upload songs on the Playlist for the Planet website (www.davidsuzuki.org/playlist ).

Once musicians have uploaded their songs to the site, fans will vote at the end of the summer for their favourites to determine the 10 most popular. Those songs will be presented to a panel of judges who will choose at least two winners to include on the recording alongside some of Canada’s finest musicians. Songwriters will also be eligible for prizes including an FSC-certified sustainable wood Gibson guitar from Long McQuade.

The final album will be released for download and on CD in November, with proceeds going to the David Suzuki Foundation.

CCMIA Restructures to meet Current Challenges in the Canadian Music Industry

The members of the CCMIA -- Music Newfoundland and Labrador, Music Nova Scotia, Music Prince Edward Island, Music New Brunswick, Music and Film in Motion (Northern Ontario), Manitoba Music, SaskMusic, Alberta Music, Music B.C. and Music Yukon – together represent more than 5,000 registered members and an additional 3,000 associated members. All are actively engaged in the music industry and include artists, managers, publicists, agents, educators, promoters and other music industry entrepreneurs.

The CCMIA is the national voice for its members and, through its members the thousands of Canadians who contribute to Canada’s artistic and cultural diversity with a positive economic impact on the Canadian economy of hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Technological advancements have profoundly affected the music business model. This has rendered services and assistance, historically provided by major music labels, no longer available to Canadian artists. The members of the CCMIA are filling this void by offering extensive day-to-day advice, assistance, support, programs and services to music industry entrepreneurs (both artists and service providers) throughout Canada.

“Currently proposed amendments to copyright legislation present challenges and opportunities to ever-changing digital marketing platforms and processes,” said J.P. Ellson, chair, CCMIA. “There is a tremendous need for standardization in training of cultural workers, and it is time for Canadian music industry artists and professionals to be heard on a national stage. CCMIA provides that united voice for the industry.”

“Our members are a crucial element for a stable diversified national economy and as such they require and deserve a national voice,” added Vice-Chair Bob D’Eith.

The new CCMIA executive team includes Chair J.P. Ellson (SaskMusic), Vice-Chair Bob D’Eith (Music B.C.) and Secretary-Treasurer Denis Parker (Music Newfoundland and Labrador).

The CCMIA, originally incorporated in 2002, is embarking on a series of initiatives and projects that will assist its thousands of members and through them improve the diversification and stability of the Canadian economy.

Grammy Nominees to Play House Concert - Upper Coverdale, NB Bluegrass Grammy Award Nominees Raymond McLain and Mike Stevens will be in Upper Coverdale, NB on Tuesday August the 10th performing a House Concert at the home of Ivan and Vivian Hicks. The show will begin at 7:30 pm. Space is limited so reservations are required. Among the many accolades they have received is a Grammy Nomination in the late 1980’s when playing with Jim and Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys. Mike is acknowledged as one of the best Harmonica Players on the PLANET! He goes where no other player goes with this unconventional bluegrass instrument. He has been labeled a true innovator in his genre. In fact his techniques are studied around the world and documented in the Smithsonian Institution. He tours internationally including recent forays to Taiwan and Japan. In addition he has performed more than 300 times on the Grand Ole Opry Stage. Mike is also renowned for his work with ArtsCan Circle a charity he founded to help at risk youth in the north. Through ArtsCan Mike collects instruments to be taken north and encourages kids there to learn music and express themselves. Raymond McLain is a truly amazing musician. He is featured in “Masters of the Five String Banjo” and has influenced many including the playing style of Bela Fleck. He has toured in more than 60 countries, performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Centre and The Kennedy Centre with the McLain Family Band as well as countless times on the ‘Opry Stage with Jim and Jesse McReynolds. He has also performed with the likes of Doc Watson, John Hartford and Alison Krauss. Collectively Mike and Raymond have released more than 10 albums and they perform regularly at Carter and Lewis Family events in the US and at Bluegrass and Folk Festivals far and wide. East Coast Style' Promotional Compilation CDs: Volume 3 Deadline to submit: July 30, 2010 The East Coast Music Association is excited to announce a call for submissions for its 3rd edition of the ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style'; compilation CDs. Distributed to 2000 International and Canadian delegates, as well as sold exclusively at ECMA events and on line store, these two promotional CDs will be used to market and promote Atlantic Canadian artists at upcoming Canadian and International music industry conferences (ECMA 2011, Canadian Music Week, International Folk Alliance Conference, Atlantic Film Festival, NXNE, Australia Song Summit). ECMA will be producing two-genre themed promotional compilation CDs: ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style Roots'; and ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style Rocks';. The ECBS is working with the Dutch Mason Blues Festival to create a ';Blues Idol'; competition in Truro throughout July. Amateur singers will be able to enter one of three a singing auditions on subsequent Saturdays at the Truro Mall. They will be judged by David de Wolfe, a representative of Big Dog radio, the Truro Mall, the ECBS and Mingo's music, and voted on by the public. The winner gets the chance to sing a couple of songs at the Dutch Mason Festival and prizes from the Mall. We (the ECBS) have been asked if we can supply an audition band. This would require the band being in Truro on Saturday afternoons. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED SCHEDULE. Each entrant will choose one classic blues song from the list (attached with schedule). The band will open with a few songs of their own and then provide the accompaniment for the audition. Back line will be supplied. Please note that this is a request for a volunteer band. 1. Music New Brunswick unveils the first edition of the MNB Awards! / Musique Nouveau-Brunswick dévoile la première édition des Prix MNB !

According to MNB executive director, Jean Surette, these awards underline the fantastic work accomplished by the province’s artists and industry professionals: “There is a lot of great musical talent in this province and the people of New Brunswick are lucky to have so many excellent musicians amongst them. But beyond the musical artists, there are other industry professionals who work hard to promote NB music in general. It’s important to encourage all of these people by distributing awards voted on by their peers and the public. This will greatly contribute to the development of the music industry in the province.”

Eligibility All New Brunswick artists who have released recordings between October 1st, 2008 and July 31st, 2010 are eligible to apply for the 2010 Music NB awards. Applicants must be from New Brunswick (either born in the province or having lived here for at least two years). The submission period starts on June 30th and ends on July 30th , 2010, at 5 PM, Atlantic Time.

Pour le directeur général de Musique NB, Jean Surette, ces prix sont une façon de reconnaître tout le superbe travail accomplit par les artistes et les professionnels en musique de la province : « Il y a du talent musical extra-ordinaire dans cette province et les Néo-brunswickois peuvent se trouver chanceux de pouvoir côtoyer de si excellents musiciens. Mais au-delà des musiciens, il y a ces professionnels de l’industrie qui les aident à se faire connaître ou qui aident à promouvoir la musique du N.-B. en général. Il est important d’encourager ces deux groupes de façon particulière en leur attribuant des récompenses décidées par leurs pairs et par le public. Cela contribue à l’essor de l’industrie musicale de notre province. »

Éligibilité Les artistes ayant sorti des enregistrements entre le 1er octobre 2008 et le 30 juillet 2010 sont éligibles pour les Prix Musique NB 2010. Les candidats doivent être originaires du N.-B. ou y habiter depuis au moins deux ans. Les candidatures doivent être soumises entre le 30 juin et le 30 juillet 2010, avant 17 h, heure de l’Atlantique.

1. Grammy Nominees to Play House Concert - Upper Coverdale, NB

Bluegrass Grammy Award Nominees Raymond McLain and Mike Stevens will be in Upper Coverdale, NB on Thursday, ....TUESDAY -----August the 10th performing a House Concert at the home of Ivan and Vivian Hicks. The show will begin at 7:30 pm. Space is limited so reservations are required. Tickets for the Hicks' House Concert are $15 and can be obtained by calling Ivan and Vivian at 506 386-2996, 506 386-5812 or email ivan@ivanhicks.com Mike Stevens and Raymond McLain are a dynamic Bluegrass and Old Tyme duo. Among the many accolades they have received is a Grammy Nomination in the late 1980’s when playing with Jim and Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys.

Mike is acknowledged as one of the best Harmonica Players on the PLANET! He goes where no other player goes with this unconventional bluegrass instrument. He has been labeled a true innovator in his genre. In fact his techniques are studied around the world and documented in the Smithsonian Institution. He tours internationally including recent forays to Taiwan and Japan. In addition he has performed more than 300 times on the Grand Ole Opry Stage.

Mike is also renowned for his work with ArtsCan Circle a charity he founded to help at risk youth in the north. Through ArtsCan Mike collects instruments to be taken north and encourages kids there to learn music and express themselves.

Raymond McLain is a truly amazing musician. He is featured in “Masters of the Five String Banjo” and has influenced many including the playing style of Bela Fleck. He has toured in more than 60 countries, performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Centre and The Kennedy Centre with the McLain Family Band as well as countless times on the ‘Opry Stage with Jim and Jesse McReynolds. He has also performed with the likes of Doc Watson, John Hartford and Alison Krauss.

Collectively Mike and Raymond have released more than 10 albums and they perform regularly at Carter and Lewis Family events in the US and at Bluegrass and Folk Festivals far and wide. Their show is truly like no other. They were recent mainstage performers at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival where they brought a crowd of thousands to their feet. 3. ECMA 'Canadian Music. East Coast Style' Promotional Compilation CDs: Volume 3

The East Coast Music Association is excited to announce a call for submissions for its 3rd edition of the ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style'; compilation CDs. Distributed to 2000 International and Canadian delegates, as well as sold exclusively at ECMA events and on line store, these two promotional CDs will be used to market and promote Atlantic Canadian artists at upcoming Canadian and International music industry conferences (ECMA 2011, Canadian Music Week, International Folk Alliance Conference, Atlantic Film Festival, NXNE, Australia Song Summit).

ECMA will be producing two-genre themed promotional compilation CDs: ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style Roots'; and ';Canadian Music. East Coast Style Rocks';. Sonicbids has partnered with ECMA to reserve 30 slots for Sonicbids artists on the two compilations.

The Tantramarsh Blues Society Presents The Lurrie Bell Band (Chicago) 9 PM, Friday, July 9, George's Roadhouse Tickets: $15 (available at Ducky's and Tidewater Books)

Born on December 13, 1958, the son of famed Chicago blues harmonica master Carey Bell, Lurrie Bell was raised in a Chicago household naturally steeped in the blues. “Because of my dad there was all kinds of music, growing up in that house,” Bell reminisces. All manner of blues greats would regularly drop by to rehearse: guitarists including Eddie Taylor, Eddie C. Campbell, Jimmy Dawkins, and Eddy Clearwater (Bell's cousin); harmonica legends like Big Walter Horton; and equally storied keyboardists including Sunnyland Slim and Muddy Waters sideman Lovie Lee, whom Bell came to regard as his spiritual grandfather.

At 15, he formed his first band while attending Crane High School on the city’s West Side. In 1977 at the age of 17, Bell was a founding member of The Sons of Blues with fellow Chicago blues scions Freddie Dixon (son of Willie) and Billy Branch (son of Ben), and performed that year at the Berlin Jazz Festival presented as the New Generation of Chicago Blues. Soon afterwards the group cut three standout tracks for Alligator Recordss Grammy-nominated series Living Chicago Blues. Lurrie had already made his first appearances in the recording studio earlier that year with his father on Carey’s Delmark album Heartaches and Pains, and on Eddie C. Campbell's Rooster Blues album King of the Jungle. Not only was Bell recognized as an exceptionally talented guitarist and musician, his knowledge of different blues styles, his soulfulness and his musical maturity brought write-ups in publications such as Rolling Stone and The New York Times. At 20, Bell joined the band of Chicago’s acknowledged Queen of the Blues: Koko Taylor and stayed for several years, honing his chops and learning the ropes of being a traveling musician. Bell teamed up again with his father, as a member of Carey Bell’s Blues Harp Band. ';It was quite an experience,'; Bell says fondly. ';He always told me I sounded as good as his guitarist, Eddie Taylor, and it made me feel good to hear those comparisons.'; Battling and defeating a series of personal demons kept him out of the studio and off the road for a long spell in the late 1980’s, but Bell finally persevered and re-surfaced in the mid-1990’s with a succession of four highly acclaimed records for Chicago’s Delmark label. In 2002 saw the release of the CD Cuttin’ Heads and in 2004 Alligator Records released Second Nature an acoustic duet record with Carey Bell that was nominated for Acoustic Record of the Year by the Blues Foundation in Memphis. Sadly, Lurrie lost his long-time friend, partner, and mother of his daughter Aria, Susan Greenberg, to cancer on January 20, 2007. Lurrie's loss of Susan was soon followed by the death of his legendary father, Carey Bell, to heart failure on May 6, 2007. Their last recorded project together, the live DVD/CD release on Delmark, Getting Up Live ended up to be their most special. Bell responded by immersing himself even deeper into his music and with the generous financial support of the Greenberg family launched his own label imprint Aria B.G. Records. The result was Let’s Talk About Love his most accomplished, deeply heartfelt album yet. Produced by longtime associate Matthew Skoller, the record vividly displays Bell’s unshakeable faith in the power of the blues. Bell’s recorded output has been prodigious, even despite his lengthy absence from the scene: he has contributed to well over 50 albums. Bell was voted Most Outstanding Guitar Player in the 2007 Living Blues magazine critics’ poll, and was nominated for a 2007 Blues Music Award for Best Guitarist by the Blues Foundation. As producer Skoller’s liner notes for Let’s Talk About Love observe, ';Lurrie is now a blues master at a needed time when there are very few blues masters left.'; Reviews of Bell’s new CD: “ Lets Talk About Love” On his latest CD, Bell’s guitar work melds raw emotion and fiery technique in a majestic meld of tonal aggression, linear sureness, and exploratory drive. 2. Isabelle Thériault ouvre un centre de formation en musique, en chant et en gigue dans la Péninsule acadienne

Caraquet, N.-B. – 14 juin 2010) La Péninsule acadienne est maintenant dotée d’un nouveau centre de formation en musique, en chant et en gigue, l’Espace TourneSol Inc. Lancé par l’artiste multi-instrumentiste, Isabelle Thériault, l’Espace TourneSol est situé au Centre culturel de Caraquet, au 220, boulevard St-Pierre Ouest. Les différentes formations sont offertes aux gens de 7 à 77 ans et commenceront dès septembre 2010. Une session d’information pour le public aura lieu le mardi 29 juin de 16 h à 19 h dans le foyer du Centre culturel de Caraquet.

En inaugurant l’Espace Tournesol, Isabelle Thériault, connue pour avoir été membre de la formation Les Muses, DRUM et Ode à l’Acadie et pour avoir été à la barre de nombreux spectacles, réalise un rêve qu’elle caresse depuis longtemps. « C’est une idée que j’ai eue quand j’étais encore adolescente. Toutefois, je voulais d’abord faire des études universitaires, goûter au monde du spectacle et voyager avant d’entamer ce nouveau projet. Après dix années sur la route, le temps est maintenant venu ! », s’exclame-t-elle en soulignant que l’Espace TourneSol s’adresse autant aux amateurs qui souhaitent s’épanouir artistiquement qu’au professionnels qui cherchent à perfectionner leur art.

Trois écoles de formation

L’Espace TourneSol comprend trois écoles de formation : l’École de musique, l’École de chant et l’École de gigue. L’École de musique offrira une formation dans le domaine instrumental (piano, accordéon, guitare et bodhrán – tambour irlandais). Les élèves seront amenés à explorer un répertoire varié, à jouer avec d’autres artistes et à monter sur scène. Isabelle Thériault explique qu’elle veut les mettre en contexte le plus possible : « Je souhaite former des musiciens polyvalents qui puissent s’adapter à différents univers musicaux ».

L’École de chant offrira trois volets. La formation en Interprétation et Voix sera axée sur la technique vocale et la présence sur scène, le Coaching sera destiné aux artistes solos et aux groupes qui souhaitent être guidés dans leur démarche artistique, tandis que les Ensembles Vocaux mettront l’accent sur les harmonies vocales et un répertoire des musiques du monde. Isabelle Thériault veut d’ailleurs mettre sur pied non pas un, mais quatre ensembles vocaux : enfants, adolescents, adultes et retraités. Elle vante les talents vocaux de la région : « La Péninsule acadienne regorge de superbes voix. J’ai envie de faire du chant choral de façon dynamique et d’écrire de nouveaux arrangements vocaux. J’espère que les gens répondront à l’appel ! ».

ui résidante de Bas-Caraquet, qui enseignera cette danse traditionnelle acadienne. Michelle a fait partie de la troupe de danse La Baie en Joie et du groupe Grand Dérangement. Elle a fait de nombreuses tournées au Canada, en Europe et aux États-Unis. « Nous sommes chanceux d’avoir Michelle LeBlanc parmi nous, avoue Isabelle. Faire revivre la gigue dans la Péninsule acadienne, c’est quelque chose qu’on souhaitait depuis longtemps. » L’École de gigue offrira une formation en groupe pour les enfants, les adolescents, les adultes et les retraités.

En plus de diriger l’Espace TourneSol, Isabelle Thériault continuera à offrir des services personnalisés dans le domaine des arts de la scène notamment en direction musicale d’évènements et en consultation artistique.

Toronto, Ontario- 06/11/2010- FACTOR is pleased to announce that music videos from 19 FACTOR supported artists have received 34 nominations for the 2010 Much Music Video Awards (MMVA). One nomination highlight is the ';MuchFACT Indie Video Of The Year'; category where all 5 nominated videos (Alexisonfire, Arkells, Belly, Metric , Ten Second Epic) are from FACTOR funded sound recordings. This year's awards broadcast will be on June 20, 2010.

The following nominated artist's sound recordings received funding from FACTOR:

ArtsLink NB Election Policy Draft, June 9 2010 ';Arts is the magnet. Everything in a region can be defined by its approach to arts and culture.'; John McLaughlin, President Emeritus of University of New Brunswick ArtsLink NB works with stakeholders from all arts disciplines and communities throughout the province, and is a unified network of artists, institutions and organizations. ArtsLink NB's objectives include the support and growth of the Arts and Culture Sector through education, training, promotion and cultural development.

ArtsLink NB has the commitment of provincial artists and arts organizations, institutions and associations. ArtsLink NB works closely with l'Association acadienne des artistes professionnel.le.s du Nouveau-Brunswick (AAAPNB) regarding Arts and Culture issues in the province.

The ';Statégie globale pour l'intégration des arts et de la culture dans la société acadienne au Nouveau-Brunswick'; is a cultural policy document that was extensively researched and included input from artists across the province. It contains many of the core principles for integration and growth of arts and culture, and can be used as the cornerstone of a provincial Arts and Culture Policy.

In regards to Arts and Culture, the priority activities of the Government of New Brunswick should be:

1. Development of Arts and Culture Infrastructure and Policy

• The creation and implementation of a comprehensive Arts and Culture Strategy for New Brunswick using the AAAPNB's ';Strategie Globale'; as the blueprint.

• Creation and support of a Cultural Human Resources Council of New Brunswick, similar to the Canadian Human Resources Council of Canada.

• Equitable support and development of provincial arts programs cross-culturally.

• Implementation of ';Premiers' Working Group on the Socio-Economic Status of Artists';.

• 1% for the Arts in provincial capital projects for new public buildings be reserved and allocated for public art.

• Implementation of tax measures to help improve the socio-economic status of artist: reduce or remove business tax on studios in artists' homes, and reduce provincial income tax on earnings from artistic activity to support the growth of the cultural industry.

• Implement multi-year funding options for arts organization, associations and institutions based on strategic plans and solid objectives.

The Arts and Culture sector is responsible for 10,614 jobs in the Province of New Brunswick (direct employment). Between 1996-2002 the culture sector contribution to the economy of New Brunswick increased by 37%. In New Brunswick direct economic impact of the culture sector in 2002 amounted to $604million or 2.85 percent of the GDP.

The Arts and Culture Sector has a potential for growth in New Brunswick, with well-documented links to improved youth retention, immigration, tourism and job creation.

';Artists are entrepreneurs and need the same small-scale support as a business, such as: access to capital, equipment, skills development and networking. There is huge potential for employment in the arts. In NB, we have advanced tele-communications that could help artists work remotely instead of leaving to work in big cities. Government should to encourage us put together 'the pieces of the puzzle.''; Amy Anderson, New Brunswick Artist

2. Increase Support for the Growth and Development of the New Brunswick Cultural Industry:

• Increase funding support of $5 million annually to arts and culture sector, each year for the next 4 years.

• Increase budget of Arts Development branch to support core sustainability for New Brunswick arts organizations.

• Increase support for artsNB to encourage and support the growth of the emerging artist population in New Brunswick.

The cost to generate one job in the arts and culture sector is roughly $20,000, while the cost to generate one job in industry is $200,000. Investment in the arts creates more jobs per dollar than investment in industry- ten times more. Statistics Canada/NSCAN: Building the Creative Economy in Nova Scotia

In 2007 the arts and culture sector in Canada accounted for 1.1 million jobs- as many as the agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, oil gas and utilities sectors combined. Based on the 2005 Study conducted by ACOA- The Culture Sector in Atlantic Canada.

Funding added to the artsNB budget will translate directly into hundreds of new small-business projects and employment opportunities, building New Brunswick's arts sector and creating employment growth as products are created for New Brunswick markets and abroad, increasing NB Cultural creative exports.

In 2009, patrons of the arts spent over $800 million in New Brunswick. Over 200 million Arts and Culture dollars leave the province. There is growth potential for professional arts in New Brunswick. These figures are significant and represent a potential strong positive economic return on the suggested investment of $5 million.

3. Development of Arts and Culture in the New Brunswick Education System

The benefits of arts training in educational systems is well-documented. ArtsLink encourages the government of New Brunswickto engage in:

• Re-introduction of music, visual art, dance and theatre as part of regular elementary curriculum.

• Increased communication and engagement with professional artists and arts institutions at high school levels.

• Commitments to increase business and administration training for artists at post-secondary level.

The Culture Division provides annual assistance and services to the culture sector, one of the fastest growing sectors in Nova Scotia. The direct and indirect impact of the culture sector in Nova Scotia, as measured by the contribution to the GDP, was estimated at almost $1.2 billion in 2001, with some 28,000 direct and indirect jobs depending on culture activities.

6. ECMA Artists Perform at Australia's 2010 Song Summit

'Sydney Meets Sydney' project launched at ECMA 2010

';Sydney Meets Sydney'; at the 2010 Song Summit in Sydney, Australia from June 19-21. Launched at ECMA 2010 - the ';Sydney Meets Sydney'; partnership initiative between the like-named cities was established to facilitate new reciprocal business and touring/ export opportunities for both Atlantic Canadian and Australian artists. While in Sydney, Nova Scotia, for the 2010 East Coast Music Awards, Festival and Conference, Australian artists Dead Letter Chorus and Fergus Brown teamed up with Canadian-born artists Carmen Townsend and Two Hours Traffic for a series of collaborations and music showcases. From June 19-21, East Coast artists Carmen Townsend, along with Two Hours Traffic will travel to Sydney, Australia for the 2010 Song Summit, featuring individual and collaborative performances on Sunday, June 20 at the Home Nightclub at Darling Harbour. This will coincide with their first extensive Australian tour (June/ July) and supporting label releases for both acts. We need to have a common vision. As the music industry association for NB, we need to know what your challenges are. We want to be able to support and foster while developing new ideas and strategies to support our industry together!

Songwriting Workshop With John Capek

A workshop for both up and coming and experienced song writers, this will be a 3 hour session dealing with writing techniques and hands on learning. The participants will be invited to present one of their songs, live or recorded, for critique and commentary. LANCEMENT DE L’ALBUM DES FINALISTES D’ACCROS DE LA CHANSON 2010

La Fédération des jeunes francophones du Nouveau- Brunswick (FJFNB) vous invite au lancement de l'album des finalistes d'Accros de la chanson 2010 dans le cadre de la diffusion en direct de l'émission En Rafale de la Première Chaîne de Radio-Canada Acadie.

DATE : Le vendredi 14 mai 2010

HEURE : 16h à 18 h

LIEU : Foyer du Théâtre Capitol, Moncton (811 rue Main)

En première heure de l'émission, les finalistes d'Accros de la chanson seront présentés et les pièces enregistrées aux studios de Radio-Canada Acadie seront diffusées pour la première fois à la radio. Ce sera une découverte pour le public. Le porte-parole de cette édition, Kevin McIntyre et le réalisateur de l'album, George Belliveau, discuteront de leur contribution au projet. Également, un membre du groupe KeroZen, gagnant de la catégorie groupe de l'édition 2009 d'Accros de la chanson, témoignera de l'influence du projet sur leur carrière de jeunes musiciens. Animée par Samuel Chiasson, l’émission sera diffusée aux quatre coins des provinces de l’Atlantique.

Un léger goûter sera servi. Portes ouvertes à 15h30, l'entrée est libre.

The only way to submit an application to FACTOR is with a hard copy application. The PDF application forms can be found at: http://www.factor.ca/Programs.aspx

8. Rik Resse hits #1

Canadian Country Rockers, Rik Reese Neon Highway and their current single 'Headin Down to Memphis', takes the number #1 spot this week on CJSE Country 89.5FM. The single entered the station's Top 20 at #18 and has climbed steadily knocking out Nashville super-group, Lady Antebellum who held the position for 4 weeks. 9. New Song Release';Bluegrass Grows'; by Don Coleman

Don Coleman was inspired and he wrote 22 bluegrass songs in 10 days.

He also published a book of the 22 songs titled ';Stash O' Grass'; Coleman is thrilled to release one of the songs from the ';Stash O' Grass'; collection.
